My father decided he wanted to get into model aircraft flying, something I always wanted to do as a boy. Unfortunately my father died before he could finish building his first plane. I inherited the unfinished plane and determined to finish what my father had started completed the kit (without the missing instructions) and proceeded to the model airfield at the old Croydon Airport.
I turned up at the airfield in 2001 with an unflown, untested and untrimmed plane and having never flown a plane before myself, I was advised by the local flyers not to attempt a solo flight on my own. Having spent many hours at the controls of a flight simulator I, despite the advise, decided to fly anyway.
More determined than ever and complicated by the fact I fly "mode 3" so no one could test fly and trim my plane and at the trepidation of the others, I flew my plane without incident 6 times that first day and received astonishment from the field, which I'll remember all my days. I took my plane home in one piece having even landed on the narrow and short runways at the Croydon airfield.
Today I also fly helicopters and consider myself a competent average flyer.
